Title: In-Situ Oil Sands Operations

It is with great pleasure that we announce the upcoming 2010-2011 annual meeting of the Calgary Association of Technical Societies (CATS) on Wednesday, November 23th, 2011. With the joint effort of six technical societies, CATS will host one annual dinner meeting on a subject of common interest, and in doing so will provide an exceptional networking opportunity.
About Our Speaker:
Daryl Foley has over 25 years of experience working both domestic and overseas in the petroleum industry, including 10 years of direct experience with oilsands operations. Daryl’s previous jobs include corrosion inspection, production optimization, integrity management, automation, and design for facilities, pipelines, and downhole completions. He has worked with both producer & service companies including BP Canada, Norcen Energy, Weatherford, Welchem, R&M Energy Systems, Dynamic Petroleum Services, and Nexen. Daryl worked at Nexen for 11 years, where he established the
Long Lake asset integrity program and owner user program, and supported various SAGD and upgrader facility start-up challenges. Daryl is now the Principle Engineer at Group Ten Engineering, where he supports oil, gas and petrochemical operating companies industries, by providing consulting services for asset integrity and reliability from design through to abandonment.
Daryl is the Chair of NACE TEG 341X - Corrosion and Materials in Oilsands (Technical Exchange Group), steering committee member with the International Pressure Equipment Integrity Association (IPEIA), Task force Lead for CSA Z662 Clause 14 (2015 release), Task Force lead for the Thermal Pipeline Task Force, co-founder of the Thermal Recovery Reliability Group, and co-founder of the Alberta Community of Quality Practice.”
In-Situ Oil Sands Operations:
Roughly 80% of Canada’s oil sands are too deep for conventional mining operations and must be tapped using in-situ production. In his presentation, Daryl will describe what in-situ is, and provide an overview of various in-situ approaches, including ‘Huff and Puff’ and Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD). Daryl will highlight when SAGD or mining operations should be applied, and also describe the various technologies and approaches that different operators use. Daryl will close out by discussing challenges that have been faced, and potential new opportunities that have become available with novel equipment and processes.
