“Changing the Welding Industry by a New Metal Transfer Mode” by Martin Willinger (Fronius Canada)
Abstract
New materials and extreme service requirements are challenging the welding industry more than
ever. To achieve these demanding requirements, new welding processes must be implemented
along with new generations of filler metals and shielding gases. For over 50 years, the welding
industry has been using the same weld joint preparation designs. By using new welding process
technology, it becomes possible to change the joint design to allow for more economic preparations (e.g., narrow joint design). These changes, in turn, result in less distortion, reduced heat input, and shorter weld time to complete the weld joint. This presentation will focus on the new welding processes developed specifically for pipe welds and cladding operations, as well as the more efficient weld gap preparations that these new processes allow.
About our Speaker
Martin Willinger was educated as a tool maker and universal welder. He also served in the military for six months. He joined Fronius in 2001, traveling through Europe, South Africa and North America on several business trips. He moved to Canada in 2001, and holding the position of TSN Manager at Fronius, he moved to Edmonton in the fall of 2011. His experience spans through many industries including automotive, nuclear, pipeline and heavy machine construction, with exposure to manual, robotic and hard automation processes. Martin has experience in TIG, MIG/MAG, SMAW, plasma, laser hybrid and tandem welding processes.
