Louis Padnos Iron and Metal Company Tour

October 11, 2011
Holland Facility
185 W. 8th Street
Holland, MI 49423

Since the turn of the twentieth century, the Padnos name has become synonymous with dedication, hard work, and fair dealing. What began as a simple, service-orientated, scrap peddling business built from scratch by Louis and Helen Padnos, has since grown into a sophisticated, environmentally aware institution with world wide influence.

This realization of the American dream began in 1905 when Louis Padnos, a young Russian emigrant, settled in Holland, Michigan. Through two world wars, the depression in the 1930’s, the company survived and has ultimately thrived, as a reflection of the Padnos’ strong belief in the value of scrap as a renewable resource, and the importance of customer satisfaction.

Visit www.padnos.com for more information.

We will be touring the Holland metal reclamation facility (fancy word for scrap yard!). The tour will be inside and out so dress appropriately. PPE recommended includes hard hat, steel toed shoes, and safety glasses. Some of this may be provided by Padnos, but please=bring your own if you have.

Technical Meeting with the President of the American Welding Society
John Mendoza

Topic: “AWS Certification”

Highlighting the global impact that AWS certification programs have had on the industry during the last 35 years, including a brief history of the CWI program.

John Mendoza is a 36 year veteran of the welding industry. Upon graduating from the San Antonio Trade School with a certificate in welding technology in 1973, Mendoza began his career as a welder’s helper with CPS Energy, San Antonio’s gas and electric utility company. After completing a three year
apprenticeship, he attained journeyman welder status in 1979. In 1992, he earned his AWS Certified Welding Inspector credentials and served as a weld inspector during construction of a 550 megawatt coal fired plant. In 1994, Mendoza was promoted to Technical Trainer, responsible for the training and
performance of power plant workers. His proficiency in plant design was instrumental in the creation of the Skills Training Evaluation Program (STEP) used by CPS Energy for employee development. In 2005, Mendoza was elected to the Texas Skills USA Board of Directors.

Mendoza retired in 2010 after 36 years of service from CPS Energy. He currently works as a consultant for Lone Star Welding in San Antonio, Texas.
